My mother’s branch of the family is very much a product of the British Isles, including England, Ireland, and Scotland with a bit of evidence suggesting some also came from Normandy. The two sides of my mother’s family are the Berry’s and the Morrison’s.
Morrison
Most seem to have crossed the Atlantic in the 17th and 18th centuries living on the East coast of the US and later moving further west. Some evidence suggests they first came to America between 1716 and 1720, settling in Virginia before migrating to Rowan and Iredell Counties, North Carolina. They apparently were living in Northern Ireland in the early 1700s and before that, in Scotland around Aberdeen and Glasgow. Since they were in Northern Ireland during the early 1700s, they may have been part of the British plantation project but so far, no evidence to support that theory.
Berry
According to some stories, the Berrys were from England and Scotland. They also crossed the Atlantic earlier in the mid-seventeenth century, possibly around 1650, and settled in the Virginia area before moving west to the Kentucky wilderness. Some fought in the Revolutionary War. A few were Quakers which is significant in that Quakers were known to keep very detailed records of meetings and church activities and much can be learned from surviving records as they are found and made available.
